It is a shame there is no way for a browser to detect jerks vs. cool people and allow the cool people to download to their hearts' content. As artists, the whole issue of what to do about having people save the images is one which actually pains us greatly. If someone buys a membership to one of our sites, as artists we want them to download the pictures to their hard drive, make screensavers, make wallpaper, print 'em out and put them on the refrigerator. Shooting for print publications, we love it when we go to someone's home and they have cut out a picture we took and used it to decorate. As artists and as part of the Gothic community, it is really important to us that we get credit for our work. In print, this has not been a problem. Online, however, it has been amazingly frustrating. People have cropped off our copyright info and claimed they took the pictures we took and asked interested models to mail them nude pictures and to tell them where they live. There are a couple of jerks who produce nothing, who run software programs which download all the images from a newsgroup without the attached messages and conversation which make the newsgroup a community, and then they either put the pictures up on pay sites or they use them on sites which sell disgusting lolita porn or both. We hope that someday soon there will be better ways to protect one's creations from thieves without having to make it harder for everyone. If it were easier to get an ISP or a billing company to shut down a thieving pay site without going to court . . . if webmasters who steal were not so disagreeable about removing images when asked . . . if people did not believe that modern pictures could be public domain when there is no such thing as a color picture in the public domain . . . Color photography has not been around long enough for any color images to be in the public domain.
